Saltwater/Coral Help!?

O.K. so i bought some damaged corals for a very cheap price. Before i put them in my tank i dipped them in a “coral disinfectant” and then proceeded to place them inside. They have been doing well, so far. I was wondering if there is any product or way to help speed up the recovery process. BTW: I bought a Pagoda Cup, and Alveopora. I do regularily dose the tank with Iodine, Magnesium, and Strontium. Is there anything else i should do? Thanks any help is appreciated!

Get those pencil urchins out of there! I just read your other question, and the pencil urchins will eat the corals. They are most certainly not reef safe.

The best method of controlling water chemistry for a lightly stocked coral tank is regular water changes with RO water and a decent salt brand. There is a balance in the water chemistry in the aquarium and dosing one element will affect the levels of another. If it is not a heavily stocked reef tank, I would avoid many of the supplements if I were you as you wil just get things out of whack. With regular water changes and low stock the corals rarely are consuming the calcium and other elements at a rate faster than you are replacing it through water changes.

As far as what you are adding, those corals need calcium, they are LPS (large polyp stony coral). Take it slow and easy and test like crazy if you are manually dosing. You’ll want to watch your calcium, carbonate hardness, pH, magnesium, etc, carefully if dosing with one or all of those elements. If you are dosing you had better be testing regularly. People crash tanks allt he time from improper dosing. Too much calcium can drop the pH suddenly and cause a whole world of problems for example.

If you want to add in stuff to help promote growth, Reef Vital DNA is a nice product for adding in extra trace elements and promoting coral growth.

If you really want to get into keeping coral, invest in a few good books. There are a million out there.
